Five tips to improving your website

How to fix some of the big mistakes

For small businesses, a good website can go a long way to improving sales and customer engagement. Unfortunately, websites are often designed once and then left neglected. This can make updating a website a big challenge for small business owners. It’s hard to know where to start and what needs to be done!

So to help you get started, here’s five hints and tips on how you can fix some of the big mistakes we often see with small business websites:

  1. Broken links

This is the fastest way to get someone to leave your website. Broken links slow down the user experience and can make a website feel like a maze. Check to make sure that your social media accounts are properly linked and that your menus take you to where you want to go. If your website has a store, ensure that the products are properly listed and available.

  1. Design and theme

Having a consistent design theme is about creating a website that is visually-appealing, aligned with your brand ethos, and functional. Website’s that chop and change between too many fonts, use space inconsistently, and switch between layouts often look stitched together rather than deliberately designed. If you’re not sure how you want your website to look, search for inspiration from some big companies like Apple, Nike, or Disney.

  1. Relevant and accurate

It is essential that you keep your content up-to-date. Old promotions, menus, and photographs look tacky and can often cause problems. Your website isn’t an archive for everything you’ve ever done – make sure to review it regularly and update the content accordingly. Generally it’ll be relatively easy for you to make minor updates as you need, but if you’ve made big changes to your business you may want to consider completely redesigning your website.

  1. Contact information

Ensure that your contact information is correct and simple. If you’re using an integrated contact section with your website make sure that it is monitored so that you don’t miss anything from your customers. Avoid using long email addresses or listing multiple phone numbers – this can be confusing. Most importantly, never leave someone unanswered!

  1. Easy to use

Make sure that your website is easy to use! Everyone has too many things to do and too many places to be to be spending time on a website that’s difficult to use. Try less clutter, more white space, and clear menus. Simple changes, like cutting down on animations, can make your website faster and more user-friendly.
